TEACHER BITE SIZE: THREE GREAT USES OF FLIP BOOKS
Have you ever tried using flip books (or flipbooks) in the classroom? If you haven’t, well, you and your students are missing out! Not only are flip books a refreshing break from your usual textbook or worksheet, students also have a lot of fun assembling and filling them out.
Flip books have tons of uses. Seriously, there are just so many things you can do with them, but for today’s post, I’ll talk about three great uses of flip books:
1. Use flip books for notetaking.
Have your students take notes in their flip books while you’re discussing a topic or showing them information from a PowerPoint presentation. It would be really good if the flip book and PowerPoint complement each other. I had one teacher write to me, saying she’s using my complementary water cycle PowerPoint and flipbook to train her second graders early on with notetaking! Isn’t she brilliant?
2. Use flip books for researching and collecting facts.
Do you want to make research a bit more exciting? Try using flip books. Students would love drawing and answering questions in their flip books as they go researching online or using books and magazines. I had another teacher write to me, saying she bought several books on animals to go with my animal research flipbook bundle. This enabled her kids to research and collect facts even without Internet access. A good friend, Amber from TGIF, sent me photos of her students researching online using my spider research flipbook. Both are really awesome teachers who know how to engage their students!
3. Use flip books for journaling.
Flipbooks can be used for journaling as well. Journaling is the process of keeping a record of occurrences, experiences, and reflections on a regular basis. Flip books are great for keeping a record of your students’ observations. It can be used for observing the growth of plants or certain animals. If you want to train your students to conduct experiments and record data by way of the scientific method, you can also use flipbooks.
